First novel of the year

Eighth grade students at Coal City Middle School will begin reading their first novel of the year in social studies class. The students are reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Fever, 1793.” The story takes place in the capital of Philadelphia during George Washington’s presidency.  The story demonstrates the hardships of one family as it struggles to survive yellow fever. The students are making predictions about the events to come and making connections with society today.
