Mrs. Sobieck’s seventh-grade social studies classes are currently working on creating their own Utopian (perfect) country. They started by researching a specific country to learn about what already exists there. Next, students worked in groups to “build” their Utopia. They have made decisions about the government and economy of their country. For example, while looking at their Utopia’s government, students had to decide on the “best” government type for their country, create a constitution along with other laws, and decide what the leader of the country would be called and how the country would decide on their leader. Additionally, students chose the “best” economic system for their country to allocate its resources. Students demonstrated creativity in designing their country's flag and currency; they also explained the culture, such as clothing, foods, holidays, traditions, etc. Ultimately, the Utopia project will culminate with students producing a presentation to share with the class. Mrs. Sobieck said it has been a great journey seeing the students demonstrating their imagination and innovation to fabricate their idyllic Utopia (paradise).
