Students in sixth grade English/language arts have been hard at work and are wrapping up the poetry unit. Students have sharpened their skills in identifying and interpreting various forms of figurative language, including metaphors, similes, and personification.
English teacher Mrs. Fincher shared that the students have explored different poetic structures, from free verse, concrete, haikus, and limericks, helping students understand how form can enhance meaning.
Discussions have centered around the purpose behind poetry and how to derive deeper meanings from the text. Sharon Creech's novel "Love That Dog" has been a springboard for the analyses.
“Students have enjoyed examining the poems mentioned in the book, making connections between literature and poetry. Working in groups, students have shared insights and learned from each other, fostering a supportive learning environment,” Mrs. Fincher said.
